I am late in replying to this but yes, this was a new computer, a new OS, and a
new XQuartz install. For some reason the xterm is started as a thread, Terminal
is not. Where can I find out *how* xterm is started?

The story behind the new computer is very frustrating but certainly not
XQuartz’ fault.

Best
Volker
