Well, one reason could be that you're already using a _different_
package system than Macports, so you already have a "dependency
machinery" and a gazillion packages installed, and don't care to repeat
the process with a 3rd confusing version of Python and Perl (etc, etc)
just for a single package.
I, for one, use pkgsrc (http://www.pgksrc.org) for packages, since I'm a
NetBSD person in the "diaspora" ;-). There seems to be a binary package
% pkgin available | grep 'xorg.*server'
modular-xorg-xquartz-1.17.2nb2 X11 server for Mac OS X
that just might be "it", and if so, there just has to be a corresponding
source package, and then I'm convinced that you can build it within the
pkgsrc umbrella instead of Macports.
I haven't tried any of the above though (not even the binary server
package), so no guarantees for anything.
