I have seen numerous posts on this issue on github that all go to a single
answer
https://github.com/XQuartz/XQuartz/issues/52
<https://github.com/XQuartz/XQuartz/issues/52>
which basically says you have to immediately logout after installing 2.8.x
I have uninstalled, and then tried this … installing 2.8.2 and immediately
logging out. But there is still some script process left somewhere that seems
to relaunch X11 over and over once it is started and then quit. The only
solution for me so far is to do your xQuartz business and then logout and back
in and do not relaunch it.
