I hadn't, because the last time I set up a new machine the received wisdom was
that MacPorts was more up to date.
I now installed it, and observed the following:
1) It didn't seem to read anything from my ~/.xinitrc.d directory
2) The problem wasn't fixed.
3) When I tried to launch X11.app, it either was broken or at least not
launching the stuff from ~/.xinitrc.d.
So I uninstalled XQuartz to get back to a known state.
There used to be some instructions on how to switch beteen XQuarts and MacPorts
X11, but I can't seem to find it. If somebody can tell me point me to some
more detailed instructions on switching and/or controlling which X11 is
launched by default (and also how to make sure it actually launching your
xinits), I'd be willing to give it a more thorough examination.

In 1997 a group of programmers started writing a desktop environment to fix a
travesty they didn't create. Their program promptly found its way onto un*x
systems everywhere. Today, still opposed by a software monopolist, they survive
as soldiers of fortune. If you share their vision, if you know you can help,
and if you can connect to internet, maybe you can join... the K-Team.
