Rebuilding the cached sym files should "fix" it but there is something
in gdb that can trash one or more of those files. I haven't been able
to narrow it down (if anyone can find a cause, please file a bug
report) but, so far, I've only seen it happen on an iBook. In that
case, though, the problem was so bad that I kept a backup of the sym
files that I could quickly copy into the cache.

Have you tried rebuilding the cached symbol files? There was a thread
about this on the list just before your message...
