Frangois,
From the Xcode 1.1 Release Notes:
Code Completion Improvements
...
Current Known Issues
...
Code Sense is not supported for Java or CocoaJava.
Code completion and other initiatives for Java development support are
planned to be in a future release of Xcode. The need/desire for these
features is well known to the engineering team, but there is
substantial work to be done to provide them.
I'm not certain what is causing your "5-second hang on save" issue; I'm
unable to reproduce it on either of my systems. Can you provide a
reproducible case? If so, please file a bug report with full
information (a full Apple System Profiler report in addition to
development system particulars), then send me the bug number and an
example demonstrating the behavior so that we can research it properly.
best,
Godfrey

I use Xcode for java development.
I have setup the Index Templates which have helped a lot with the
serious hanging issues. Now I only have medium issues ( ~5 second hang
every-time I save). Index Templates may or may not be related to my
problem. Anyone know precisely what indexes do? I still don't.
Anyway my point is that I can't seem to get the code completion to
work as documented... I start typing a method name, when I press F5 I
get a list of words used in the file, some are method names some are
not. I read in the release notes that if I want to get a the list of
symbols only I have to set
PBXCodeSenseExcludeStringsFromCodeCompletion to Yes. I have tried that
and restarted Xcode but I still get the list of words and no symbols.
Is code completion still broken for java? That's not what the release
notes let us believe.
