Yes It think I agree with you in principle but then the Xcode team should make this clear and they should bug/get/force the WO team to support other IDEs...

Hi,

I am not sure the interest for the Xcode team to spend too much time around Java ...

Xcode effort is absolutely necessary regarding ObjC, ObjC++ and Applescript, but with thing like Eclipse around, I don't see the interest at all for Java.

As an ObjC and (new )Java dev, I use Xcode to build the Java part of our project to get an unified graphical build process, but I use IDEA for the java coding because it is very good, I know people using Eclipse and they are very happy with it because it is catching with IDEA regarding completion/help/refactoring.

Obviously I would be very happy to see Xcode a very good Java IDE, but I would prefer to get the kind of completion/refactoring for ObjC we can see in IDEA for Java.

For me it is a lot more important, because as programmer are lazy, it would be a very very strong point in favor of ObjC and Xcode if the Xcode team would be able to be as good as IDEA for the completion/refactoring issues. For the rest I think that Xcode is nicer : UI, build system, help, workflow ....

And just a question, excepted that Eclipse is a Java project (hence it is a good reason to have Xcode made by Apple), is the Xcode team investigated the possibility to use Eclipse as IDE architecture ?

Best regards

	Gerard

Frangois,

Code Sense is just one of several things that indexing is used to support. I recall having this conversation with you during the seed period, off line from xcode-users. Index Templates are generically useful for more than just Java development, they make a difference for large C, C++ and Objective-C development projects too. Java developers derive major benefits from using them as they eliminate a large amount of indexing work that otherwise slows operations ... All Java projects are large projects due to the structure of the Java class libraries.

The initial goals for Xcode development were to retain parity with Project Builder feature-wise for Java and AppleScript and to push forward with new features for Apple's C-family language users (C, C++, Objective-C and Objective-C++). Improving Xcode's Java and AppleScript support to match the C-family languages is in planning and will appear in future releases.
