Well, I hadn't installed the Xcode from WWDC, but I had done an update from
Panther to Jaguar.
Even after an "Archive and Install" installation of Panther, and subsequent
re-installation of Xcode, it still crashed.
However, running the tools uninstall and then reinstalling Xcode has me able
to open projects. Thanks!
