Hi Godfrey
Thanks a lot for the clarification. I found the near-simultaneous
release of Xcode Update V1.1 and Xcode Tools v1.1 very confusing. The
first I heard of them was a news report that said that Apple had
released a number of updates, including Xcode 1.1, but "they pulled the
update already", which made me a little nervous. The update is there
on ADC so I don't know if it was pulled and then re-released, or maybe
ADC site just didn't bother to remove it, or maybe there wasn't really
a problem with it.
The sentences on the ADC download page could be clearer. I can see
that you have tried hard to explain, but without knowing the background
to these two upgrades there is still some ambiguity.
"Xcode Update v1.1 ...... It is recommended that all users of Xcode
install this update. "
OK, so that's clear. I should install this update.
but then you say that "Xcode Update 1.1 is a proper subset", so that
implies that Tools includes Update, in which case perhaps I don't need
the Update. Maybe "all users of XCode should install this update
UNLESS they have installed Xcode Tools 1.1
"Xcode Tools v1.1
The Xcode Tools 1.1 release is a complete installation of the Xcode
development tools. It requires Mac OS X v10.3 for installation, and can
be installed over any existing Xcode 1.x installation. See the Read Me
document for more information. "
The keypoint is, what does "complete installation of Xcode development
tools" mean? "Complete" should be obvious, but only if you know
whether the Xcode IDE, as updated by Xcode Updater, is a "Tool"
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is there any overlap between these
two updates? Should I install both, or just the bigger one? If one is
really just a subset of the other why release it separately?
I'm trying to download the full Tools V1.2. I had to delete my entire
iPhoto collection to make room and I'm having a lot of trouble with the
connection. Messages saying the server did not exist, or I did not
have permission. Failed downloads that leave incomplete files that
can't be deleted because they are "busy" until restart.
Easy segment takes about an hour (128k ADSL) which is longer than the
timeout on the ADC site, so even a successful segment reports that the
server connection has vanished and I have to login to ADC again and
re-connect.
As the file name is "Xcode Tools 1.1 CD" there is an implication that
these files will be released on a CD. If that is the case, and such a
CD will be shipped to ADC members soon an announcement would be welcome
and might save me hours of download.
regards
Denis Stanton
