How does one add file to one target, not another?

Sorry to ask dumb question, but I have now two targets in my projects,
and I don't understand how XCode manage the file inside: there is a
file that is supposed to be in target A, not B. It appears that the
"target" column (check box) is unchecked for this one; if I check it,
then the file appears in target B as well. What does exactly means this
target column? I was under the impression that is indicaates whether
the file is part of the target, but apparently I'm wrong here.
BTW, what is the simplest way to remove a file from a target? Clicking
delete on the table view doesn't work.
