Step back for a second...
Many people complained and file bugs about defects, usability issues,
and missing features in Xcode 1.0. In response Apple wanted to quickly
get the major issues address ASAP so they released...
- Xcode Update v1.0.1 for the Xcode IDE (as stated on ADC download
page/read me) which fixed a few issues (a data corruption being the
main one).
- A few preview releases of the Xcode Update v1.1 which improved the
Xcode IDE (as stated on ADC download page/read me) and allowed further
testing and feedback.
- Xcode Update v1.1 which was the real release of the update for the
Xcode IDE (as stated on ADC download page/read me).
The usage of SW update for the v1.1 update and the releasing of the
update itself was done to get the improved Xcode IDE out to as many
folks as possible and quickly as possible since that was the
application the most amount of developers took issue with (only 16MB or
so in size). The SW update's item wording likely could have been better
but at the time I pulled it down I was thinking it was only for the
IDE, I got that in my head for some reason... maybe because of the
preview releases of the update (cannot remember exactly what SW update
said).
They also shortly afterwards released the next CD of developer tools
called Xcode Tools v1.1 (following the naming used for Xcode Tools
v1.0). As one should expect a developer CD would like have countless
things updated, since it contains a lot of stuff (tools, documentation,
SDKs, etc.).
Anyway I much prefer the release method that Apple is following. I like
to having updates, at least important/critical/helpful ones, made
available via software update and a downloadable CD of a complete
bundling of tools and docs. I think it is an improvement over was has
somewhat taken place prior to this.
Anyway as with anything else like this send in feedback directly to
Apple about this not to this list. Just don't scare them away from
using SW update please.
