After trying to download the tools image several times yesterday using the standard Apple Safari way....which totally bogs down the Finder...I switched to IE and setup Transmit as the FTP helper (someone noted this earlier on the list). That was a way better way of doing things and in something like half an hour I had downloaded the whole thing and burnt it to disk.

While I think Apple is on track with trying to have an FTP server just show up in the Finder as a mounted volume, the inherent slowness of this approach (or is it just the inherent slowness of the ADC servers???) is pretty dumb. Oh, I can remember a day when I used to be able to download OS updates via Apple's Gopher site (bypassing the crowds on FTP). Why we need to authenticate to download the Tools just stumps me anyhow.

OT: I just signed up to this list a few days ago and the very first helpful bit of information was about this XCode 1.1 update vs Tools fiasco. If not for this list, I never would have know that I was missing some updates by just going with Software Update. It would have been more helpful if Apple had made it very VERY clear at that point that the complete download is what most of us would really want.

I just played around with this and figured out how to use Transmit, or presumably any ftp program, to download from the ADC site.
