I have to add my own feelings about XCode. I usually don't really mind one appearance or another as long as it allows the job to be done, and done as quickly as possible. I used PB quite a lot and I enjoyed the single window mode, where I could open files in a separate editor when I needed to. That's also the way I use XCode right now. Basically, I usually hide the 'selected files' view at top of the window, only to leave the editor full height.

I can see the huge amount of work that the XCode team put into the product, and I can only hope the UI will refine over time. There are things that were immediately accessible in PB and which are now scattered, hidden, or more complicated than they should really be. It's nice to have all these target settings in the Build tab, but the new layout made them less intuitive to use. Especially (as was previously said) when you have multiple include paths added to a variable and it becomes tedious to edit.

The one single thing that I never, ever use is certainly Code Sense. I run XCode on a dual-processor 1Ghz G4, and it's slow as hell. Instead, I continue using the ODCompletionDictionary which is simple, efficient, unintrusive and provides an excellent template and shortcut mechanism. I have turned off Code Sense because it's simply unusable in its current form, both from a speed and UI point of view.

I also used to like having the build output as a tab in the main window, with the editor below. It's a shame that it went away.

I don't really know the reason why the team decided to completely revamp the UI instead of fixing existing bugs, add the new features and generally improve what was already there and worked well.

This said, some things like the new documentation browser, improved debugger UI, better SCM handling and improved compilation speed are all most awaited features but I still don't get why I took a complete change to integrate these.

Well, ok,

I am using Xcode for 4 months now and got the very buggy and slow version at the beginning ;)

But even at the beginning my feeling was not so bad even if the criticism you make are for the most part real :)

I am using Xcode for big project made of many big sub projects with a lot of dependencies.

Maybe you are not working with XCode the way you would for now becuase you are right there are some bug still alive.

First I think that the best layout to use Xcode is a big window with the editor in it and the context pane at the top open all the time. In this way you don't need the build or the find panel very often.

You get quick access to some file with the help of the smart group system, very useful for very big project..

For me the very important think Xcode gave is the new UI that is more clean and the speed of the compilation, plus code sense event if does not work all the time as I would want.

More later...

Best regards.

Gerard
