Folks,
First, let me thank you all for your input. I've appreciated this
thread for all the excellent comments and feedback you've provided, and
I'm working up a synopsis of your ideas and issues for the Xcode
development team managers and engineers so that they can utilize it for
the further improvement of Xcode.
The subject of UI design is a deep one that engenders passionate
debate. Please: let us be respectful of each others' opinions and not
let this turn into a flame fest. What is significant from a UI design
standpoint is how it affects your workflow and productivity, how it
either enables or constrains your ability get work done, to learn how
to use the IDE effectively. Apple is open to constructive commentary
and feedback on this topic. Xcode is a new IDE with a lot of future in
front of it: Apple is putting a lot of development energy into this
effort to make it the first class development tool suite that you
expect.
Responding to one of the hottest topics I've seen so far from a
personal perspective, I'm an agnostic about specific design centers.
I've worked with IDEs that were single window centered and multiple
window centered, and had instances with both design centers that were
both good and bad. Striking a balance that works for all types of
activities and all kinds of people is hard work, and is what our
development team is looking to achieve in the long run. My goal is to
help Apple produce that which works best for you, collectively.
Please let us know your thoughts and ideas, and don't let this list
degenerate into debate. Another venue for getting your useful feedback
directly to the engineering team, aside from submitting bug reports on
things which simply don't work as expected (remember:
<http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter>) is to send emails expressing
your feedback, thoughts and ideas to <email@hidden>.
The entire management staff in charge of Xcode development reads each
and every one of those emails.
Thank you again for your passion and interest in Xcode.
best,
Godfrey
