I'm having a strong sense of dC)jC vu with this Xcode episode. We went through
the same thing when PB 1.0 came out. Many developers were objecting or
questioning the UI and workflow of PB, and you guys diligently worked on it, and
we ended up with the very customizable UI of PB 2.1.
Now that we had PB working right, you guys throw it all out and start this
process all over again. And once again, developers are questioning and you guys
are modifying and what we're gonna end up with will be something else.
As someone using these tools to make a living, I wish they would stop changing.
CodeWarrior has gained a slew of features since the beginning, but the changes
were made slowly and the overall product is still pretty much what it was at the
beginning. Same thing goes for most products. It is a well known marketing fact
that if you're changing a product from scratch, your users will be impacted, and
you'd better have a compelling reason for the change.
I don't use these tools for the sake of using them. I use them so I can build
other things. If a hammer works one way this year and next year it works
differently, then my talent and my productivity is impacted and it's not fun to
try to make a table with a hammer that doesn't work the way it used to. I hope
we can learn from these drastic changes we're going through.
