Want gutter always off

It's a minor problem, but I dislike the annoying space taken up by the gutter when I'm coding. I'm basically using Xcode as a code editor for Java and not doing any compiles through it (still have project). I've turned on the "show gutter only when debugging" in preferences, but it's always there. The only way to get rid of it is to turn on save window state and manually hide it for each file. Ugh.
Is there something I can do in my project to indicate I am not debugging so the gutter is automatically hidden?
