Michael,
It's hard to know what the issue is without seeing your project settings and
exploring. But given that both Xcode and the makefile are using the same
compiler (GCC), the compile times should be very close to each other. In
fact, because Xcode automatically takes advantage of multiple processors,
distributed builds, etc., building a project can be much faster in Xcode
than it would be in a simple makefile, without a lot of tweaking and work on
the makefile.
You may want to compare the settings passed to the compiler by Xcode with
the settings you are using from the makefile. Perhaps a different
optimization level or something is being used.
