My apologies if my comment offended you.
I did not mean to imply that you thought I was a stupid user. My
"stupid user" comment was just a little hyperbole to make a point. I
did think that your response was a little bit smart-alecky, but that is
certainly not offensive and was not really the point of my post.
I was never "the head of developer tools" at Apple.
I knew I'd get that wrong. Sorry.
I'm sure you'll agree that documenting such complexity effectively,
simply, and thoroughly is a huge undertaking.
Agreed. In fact, I scanned through some of the new documentation that
you mentioned and would have to agree also that great strides have been
taken. New ones I particularly found interesting were "Introduction to
Moving Projects From CodeWarrior to Xcode" and "Introduction to Xcode
Workflow". I'll have to find the time to read them in more detail.
However, a point I wanted to make could also be summarized by saying
that _ideally_, documentation should be unnecessary because the UI
presents a model to the user that is immediately recognizable and
understandable. This is an ideal that I believe all developers of GUI
applications should strive towards but that we usually fail at
achieving. I wholeheartedly agree that this is especially difficult in
an IDE because the problem domain, software development, is so vast and
varied in its requirements. Still, we should always strive.
I'm reminded of these line from Woody Allen's "Manhattan":
Yale: You are so self-righteous, you know. I mean were just people.
We're just human beings, you know? You think you're God.
Isaac Davis: I... I gotta model myself after someone.
