You should always run Disk Utility - Verify Disk (and Repair if needed)
and then Repair Permissions before doing updates. Also, install
something like Macaroni <http://atomicbird.com/> so that Repair
Permissions will be run automatically once per month. But you should
still run it before installing updates.
You might try DiskWarrior from <http://alsoft.com/>. It can pick up and
fix disk problems that Disk Utility won't. Be warned though, it can
take many hours (even days!) to run, and there is no guarantee it will
work. It might be easier and less time-consuming to just reinstall OS
X.
If you do not have a backup of your important files and you can boot
from the CD/DVD, you should at least be able to access the disk, copy
the files you need to an external drive, and then reinstall OS X. Then
do the Combo Updater to get back to 10.3.5.
Fwiw, I did notice that the "optimize" portion of the update did take
about 5 minutes (give or take) to run on my PowerBook (Panther) and my
G5 (Panther Server). So it certainly wasn't a speedy update. But it did
finish on both of my systems that I updated and appears to be running
well. And I do have Xcode 1.5 on both systems.

I just did an upgrade to Xcode 1.5 which was successful. I then loaded
the 10.3.5 updates. Now my iMac won't boot.
I realize this is the wrong list for this kind of problem but I'm dead
in the water and not sure where to get an answer to such a problem. If
any of the Apple guys out their could tell me of a place to get an
answer for this problem I would really appreciate it.
Here is what's happening and what I've tried in case that helps direct
me to the right place.
Loaded the 10.3.5 updates. During the load it got to the "Optimize"
step and sat there without moving on the bar for approx. 6 hours. I
did a Force Quit on the Upgrade and then properly closed anything else
that was open, which wasn't much since I closed most everything before
the install.
Rebooted the iMac and it gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo
and just sits there.
I booted again and tried the Command Option P R combo and booted
again. Same problem.
I booted from an OS X 10.3 CD and ran repair disk multiple times and
repair permissions multiple times. It said the hard disk was okay.
Tried booting again, still no luck.
I booted from the 10.3 CD again and checked the Startup Disk options.
It sees that there is a 10.3.5 startup and it sees the OS 9.2.2 on the
same disk. I booted from the OS 9.2.2 startup and it came right up.
Tried to boot from 10.3.5 again and it is still dead.
Sorry for the intrusion and appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
