In short, Xcode 1.0 to 1.2 was a mess which slowed me down. But with
1.5 I am thrilled because I can now work just as efficiently as I did
in Project Builder.
Good for you, I guess that you're of a type of user that the Xcode
team is trying to target.
Lucky me? Remember that for Xcode 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 I was forced to work
in a way that slowed me down. I hated the Xcode UI at first and viewed
it as a step backwards from Project Builder because it seemed slanted
towards people working on bigger screens. Finally at 1.5, a key piece
of Project Builder functionality has been restored which largely
eliminates the problems I was experiencing thanks to my small screen.
So I don't really think I've got any special status as a "target".
The point of my post in this thread was not to claim that Xcode is
universally broken, only that it doesn't fit my workflow. I tried to
make that distinction clear by asking a very specific question, a
question that you don't address at all in your reply as far as I can
tell.
I wasn't trying to answer your question as much as offer a
counterpoint. You say 1.5 doesn't fit your workflow. I wanted to point
out that in Xcode 1.5 it *is* possible to do what you did in PB with
"one window" and "one click". I do it every day.
I am a Cocoa developer, that's what I do. I *need* to use Xcode, as
there is no other IDE on the market that can do that job. For that
reason in particular it's very frustrating to see Xcode moving in
directions I don't understand or agree with. It can get a bit
emotional... :)
I really don't see what everyone is complaining about.
Do you spend 8+ hours a day in front of Xcode?
Yes, and sometimes more. That's why I use a workflow that enables me to
get the most done on a 12" screen. If I had a bigger screen I might try
different work flows, but in my current circumstances it's a "no
brainer" for me to work in the way that enables me to get my work done
quicker.
Some people like chocolate ice cream, others like vanilla. In the case
of an IDE, I don't care what the flavour is; all I care about is
getting the job done as efficiently as possible.
Cheers
Greg
