I use XCode to develop ObjC apps, and IntelliJ and eclipse to develop pure
Java apps.
The biggest features that affect my decision are:
1. I don't have to pay for my IntelliJ license, although if I had command
of a budget I would gladly pay
2. I feel much more productive with the code completion, refactoring, code
generation, templates, imports organization, dead code identification, unit
testing, javdoc pop-ups, source navigationav and other features that are
offered in both intelliJ and Eclipse. XCode has some of these (and some are
irrelevant to ObjC), but really cannot hold a candle to Eclipse or IntelliJ.
I don't generally take recommendations from others without determining
their set of values, so in order to give you a better frame of reference
for my recommendation, here's what I value in an IDE:
PRODUCTIVITY
Pure and simple. I can be productive in a command line environment, and I
still value that skill. As a consultant, I get paid by the hour, but I keep
and grow my customer base because my code quality (read bug count),
productivity (read deliver on or ahead of schedule) and technical skill
(irregardless if IDE) are above average.
While an IDE cannot affect technical ability, it can do a lot to affect
code quality and productivity. Both Eclipse and IntelliJ do a lot more
toward this in the Java space than XCode.
