Dear Steve,
Since Apple are the ones who like no one else would never
miss any opportunity to tell world and dog how fantastic
they are in over performing and over delivering I see no
harm in reminding them of their self proclaimed
superiority.
If they weren't always touting their superior ways, I
might not care but things given as they are I expect more
when they do not over deliver and I will criticise them
when they under deliver.
Besides, they always get my appraisal where they earned it
and many times they do. But when they do underperform so
miserably then they will just have to cope with the fact
they they are judged against the superiority standard they
themselves have set.
The feedback I have been getting from Cocoa developers
since I started using Xcode has not been rosy. Most of the
time they confirm my observations and they take an almost
agnostic view towards it, much like Windoze users do when
they talk about what's wrong with their desktops, not like
Apple users anyway. This alone shows me that there is a
lot of work to be done for Apple to bring their developer
tools up to the same level of quality their end users
products have.
As far as your travel suggestions go, you are mistaken. I
am neither on anybody's payroll, nor am I in the software
business. I am a telephony guy doing the work that
professional developers on the Mac platform haven't yet
taken up, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it. And since the
GUI front ends I create are GPLed open source and without
any sponsorship I even qualify double as an amateur
because I make no money of it.
The work that I do get paid for, I get paid for because I
always say what I think, not what a prospective employer
does or doesn't want me to say. Some people have a problem
with that, but most people value my judgement because they
know I will not hold back with bad news if there is bad
news. This does work in Japan, too, because with so much
pretense all over the place many people here don't know
what they can believe. They appreciate an honest opinion.
If this does offend you, then I am sorry, but since I am
not a politician nor intend to become one, I will
continure to say what others think but don't dare say and
I will continue to measure Apple against their own
superiority standard. In general, I think it is a good
thing when a company commits itself in this way, thereby
allowing customers to put the screws on them.
As far as advice in respect of the disfunct info panel
window is concerned, I have so far received nothing but "I
see what you mean" email. If there has been anything more
substantial that I am not aware of yet then I suggest you
wait a little for a response as I get the list as a digest
on a separate webmail account and often I have to wait
until the weekend to go through it all. As I said, the
stuff I do is free non-sponsored work.
If there have been any suggestions of workarounds, I say
thank you very much to anybody who posted it and I will
get back to them shortly.
