input/output streams

Hello,

I'm new to mac development, and have a question:

What are the _lowest_ level / native routines for accessing the input/output streams when a program has been started from the terminal, and what functions can I use to obtain these streams ? (I'm not talking about the higher level stdin/stdout/fwrite etc.)

thanks,
