So, here's the question: Has anyone found a reference indicating
colours which have been scientifically shown to reduce eyestrain? I've
heard, for example, that a green and white checkerboard is better than
red and black. But, beyond 2 colours, I'm at a loss. I've tried to
google this, but I've found very little in this vein. It seems someone
in User-interface design MUST have addressed this question at some
point!

Only things I've read say that black letters on a white background are the best. And proportional fonts are more legible. (You do know that Xcode lets you use them for comments, even if you keep other code in a monospaced font.)

But the best user experience is of course metal. Clearly Xcode is missing out by not allowing us to edit on metal windows. Not wussy windows like Safari, where the content is some shade other than metal. But metal backgrounds. After all, real programmers like coding next to the metal.
