So, here's the question: Has anyone found a reference indicating
colours which have been scientifically shown to reduce eyestrain? I've
heard, for example, that a green and white checkerboard is better than
red and black. But, beyond 2 colours, I'm at a loss. I've tried to
google this, but I've found very little in this vein. It seems someone
in User-interface design MUST have addressed this question at some
point!

Only things I've read say that black letters on a white background are the best.

I used to agree with that. However, it seems to me that today's monitors, especially LCDs, are so bright that if you have a lot of white on your screen, it's like staring at a light bulb all day. The fact that Apple's high-contrast mode (command-option-control-8, or see Universal Access: Seeing preferences) is light on dark seems to support this.

And proportional fonts are more legible. (You do know that Xcode lets you use them for comments, even if you keep other code in a monospaced font.)

yup, haven't tried it much, though! I have trouble getting past the idea that tabs are evil... 'cause they are usually different on every platform/machine/editor. If you have to share code, you can't guarantee what anyone else will see unless you use spaces. I hate this "lowest common denominator" approach, but I don't have a better solution. :-(
But the best user experience is of course metal. Clearly Xcode is missing out by not allowing us to edit on metal windows. Not wussy windows like Safari, where the content is some shade other than metal. But metal backgrounds. After all, real programmers like coding next to the metal.

I think you've subverted that somehow... :-)

I'm sure you've all seen this.. but I think this would solve my display and colour problems... what's easier to tell apart than a 1 from a 0?
