problem with Expressions window

Does anyone else have this problem.
9 times out of 10, when I am debugging and open the Expressions window, it is disabled. All the variables listed are grayed-out. Typing in the text entry field works, but when I hit return or enter, the text I teyped just disappears and nothing is added to the list of variables. When this happens, If I click around in various places in the debugging window, and then close and re-open Expressions, all is healed. The items in the Expressions window are active, and I can add new ones by typing or drag-n-dropping.
So why didn't it work when I first opened it?
