It was a USA phenomenon, fomented mainly by plaintiffs' personal injury
lawyers who thought for several months that they had a live one. A few
people drove through their garage doors (one even ran over a baby) and
insisted that they had their foot on the brake pedal -- the harder they
pressed on the pedal, the faster the car accelerated. The first few reports
involved other makes of cars, too, but the plaintiffs' bar began focusing on
Audis and suddenly that was the only brand the newspapers and TV would talk
about.
It was finally proven by the (U.S.) Federal Transportation Safety Board that
all these cases were really cases where the driver accidentally put his or
her foot on the gas pedal. I've done it myself -- in a Volvo long ago -- and
it's really scary. For that first second or two you're convinced that your
foot is on the brake pedal, and it's terrifying to feel the car accelerate
as hard as it can. Fortunately, I have a long driveway and I realized what
the problem was in time.
It's just like accidentally clicking on the scroll bar in a background
window and feeling the scroll thumb rocket away with you....
