Thanks to all who sent helpful suggestions concerning this bug. The issue is now resolved to my satisfaction. Details follow...

It appears that I had an older version of the _assembler_ than those who reported that they could not reproduce my problem. My assembler identified itself as

+ /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/as -v -V
Apple Computer, Inc. version cctools-495.obj~4, GNU assembler version 1.38

whereas others had

+ /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/as -v -V
Apple Computer, Inc. version cctools-498.obj~14, GNU assembler version 1.38

I have re-installed the developer package (from the CD image downloaded from ADC) and found that my assembler is now updated to 'cctools-498.obj~14' and my "problem code" now compiles without error. So apparently there was a bug in cctools-495 that was fixed in cctools-498.

Thanks again for all who helped, especially Alastair Houghton who suggested that I check my assembler version.
