There's already a preliminary port of valgrind to PPC, and Apple is already distributing GPLed build/debug tools (and thus has the licensing issues sorted). This represents (again, IMO) a perfect opportunity for Apple to give the OS X development world access to a really first rate tool with a minimum of effort.

I often see developers effectively saying, "Oh, there's an opensource solution. Apple can do it." Apple seems to have enough on their plate already. Why don't you get involved?

Because porting valgrind requires intimate knowledge of PPC assembly and the internals of OS X (specifically the dynamic loader, but other parts too). If it were something that I felt I could do, I would.

Even if someone outside Apple did produce a good port, it would stand much less chance of being bundled with XCode, which is where it stands to benefit most developers.
