How to create a custom project template?

I have been hunting unsuccessfully for documentation on how to create a custom project template for Xcode. Anyone know where these docs might live?

For example Xgrid contains an example plugin template that, when copied to the appropriate location, leads to the appearance of a new type of project template under File > New Project.
