Also, could any of the power-users out there advise me on how to reset
the Finder mapping from a filename extension to a specific
application? Maybe delete a preferences file somewhere?
CMD-I (Get Info) on a file with the extension in question (e.g.,
foo.pdf). Click the 'expose' arrow for "Open With", and go where it
leads you...
You can chose to have this affect either the single you are looking at,
or all such files.
