I just got a request from a client to keep my column count per line down to 80.

Are you writing code or prose?

If you are writing the latter then I would suggest to simply wrap the text after having written it, e.g. using "fmt" or "fold" (which are among the default commands on OS X). If you have TextExtras installed, you can even do this from within Xcode.

Alternatively you may resize the window so that it exactly displays 80 columns :)
