Are you sure about that? I thought I had lost my man documentation once
as well, but it turned out that by default $MANPATH is not set (under
Panther), and so, man will find the documentation in the default
locations.
I had set it to $MANPATH:~/man or similar, which resulted in man only
looking in my user man page.
