whitespace skipping?

This is a small question but it's been driving me crazy: The
xcode editor tries to be smart about skipping whitespace but
it almost never does what I want. If I press tab at the beginning
of a series of tabs it will skip me over all of them. If I shift-arrow
select a block of text it will include blank lines after the block I
tried
to select. I can't find a way to turn this off but it's a little
unusual
in my experience, there must be SOME way...
