Not only is the 'Build' button often ignored (from the main IDE window), but if you click in the area to the left of icons and in front of the action menu popup, the build button will momentarily dim - but, in my case, not cause a build to be activated.

My guess is that the folks responsible for this function are aware of this odd behavior and we'll see a fix in the next rev of XCode.

One thing you CAN do to avoid this is simply type Command-B - it's the key-equivalent. The Build button in the 'Build Results page works fine - you can always leave a small version of that floating around...
