Xcode hanging on initiation of build or clean

I have recently been encountering an annoying problem where Xcode
becomes unresponsive immediately after I perform either of the
following actions:
1) click the 'Build' button
2) click to confirm a 'Clean all Targets'
I am getting warnings like the following in the console:

/Library/Application Support/Apple/Developer
Tools/Plug-ins/WOAssistant.pbplugin, skipping. Could not load bundle.

missing file /Users/rhoge/Desktop/JUNK/JUNK.xcode/default.pbxuser
It looks like it might have something to do with having Web Objects
installed...
Any comments on how to clear this would be appreciated - I will
probably try installing Xcode.
