Project dependencies and build styles

I really want to know: *why* is the build style of the parent project applied to subprojects when resolving dependencies? This really kills the usefulness of both build styles and dependencies for me.

What is the situation in which this is useful? Why shouldn't subprojects be allow to have their own build styles?
