I really want to know: *why* is the build style of the parent project applied to subprojects when resolving dependencies? This really kills the usefulness of both build styles and dependencies for me.

What is the situation in which this is useful? Why shouldn't subprojects be allow to have their own build styles?

I would guess because most people normally expect/want their dependent projects all built the same way. Otherwise you'd have to open up each project and change the setting by hand each time you wanted to switch.

I'd suggest logging a feature request for a per-project setting that disables this behavior for users like yourself. I can see how that would be useful in some circumstances.
