Does anybody have any hints on how I might write a script for Xcode that would toggle the target membership for any selected items in the group tree?

I often have this scenario where I end up going through massive lists of files, clicking each item as I go. Having a script to quickly toggle a large selection would make my life a lot easier.

I think you can do a multiple selection in the "Source Files" section of the target and remove the files there. Clicking on those checkboxes takes forever as XCode recalculates the whole tree after each click which takes a couple of seconds if you have lots of files in the project.
