Folks,
A recent thread about automated changing directory separators in #include paths (was it here or on the Apple MacOSX dev list?) triggered a question I have been having for a long time now. On OpenVMS there is LSE, the Language Sensitive Editor. This editor is user programmable and has a feature called learn sequence. Learn sequences are kind of macro recordings that you can bind to any key. Does anybody know of an editor on MacOSX that does something similar?
Here is an example of what I would like to do with such a beast. Lets say you have a csv export from an Excel sheet (like 5000 lines corresponding to 5000 records). Now you need to create a complex update SQL statement per record. Maybe you need to rearrange the data in the file like change the 4th field from lower to upper case and duplicate the 5th field into the 6th and add a where clause that uses the first field. With LSE I can start a learn sequence and manually massage the first line. When that first line looks the way I want I move the cursor to the beginning of the second line and terminate the learn sequence. Now it is as simple as running the learned sequence with a repeat count of 5000 and the file will be updated (yes, I know, repeat count should be 4999 but LSE is clever enough to stop when the end of the file is reached).
Should I file a feature request?
thanks a lot ---markus---
