Build products location is a personal matter. It's a user-level configuration. This makes a lot of sense, because different users prefer different storage locations.

Admittedly, the way Xcode relies upon subprojects sharing the same build location is annoying, but this just means you have to tell all of your programmers that they *have* to use a centralized build location. You don't have to force them to use the same one you do, though.

Following Bill's advice in this blog post has saved me a lot of trouble when it comes to build locations.

I highly recommend it putting your build products and intermediate files in /tmp somewhere.
