Controlling spoken items

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience controlling the speech in the Mac OS.
My and a friend had this idea for a class project in audio to create a sort of symphony or band using just the voices from the spoken items. Is it possible to access this voices in another way then writing text files? Is it possible to maybe create a gui that would be able to control it like a conductor ( tell it to loop a phrase or change voices or play two voices at the same time...etc...)?

Thanks
Jay
