Mixing debug with release in XCode 2.1

I have rebuilt my app in XCode 2.1 using gcc 4.0 and with configuration files for Debug and Release. I built everything with Release, and I need to put debug in one file so I can figure out why it won't launch. I have about 30 static libraries that my project builds and the main app links against as well as a few dynamic libraries. When I switched to Debug configuration to recompile the ONE file I want debug in, it is now looking for all of the static libraries in the Debug build folder. How do I set it up so I can just put Debug in a few files like I did in XCode 1.5?
