I suspect the problem is that the OpenEXR libraries I link to were compiled with gcc 3.3.  The OpenEXR site only has the gcc 3.3 compiled libraries, and I have been unable to find newer ones.  Has anyone here rebuild these with 4.0?

Yes, they built OK for me. Just download the source, "configure" and "make".
