Hold down the option key when splitting the window. The current limitation is that once you start splitting in a given direction, all the splits that follow in that window will be the same (so you can't mix horizontal and vertical splitting). In the future we'd like to have a better way to manage the splits directly (more like BBEdit, for example, where you drag out the split).
