Using XCode with an alterlnative GDB such as AVR-GDB

Hi, I'm trying to convince Xcode to act as a debugger for some embedded applications. I have a complete tool-chain for the Atmel AVR microcontrollers. I can happily compile and edit code in Xcode but would like to connect to a remote GDB session and use Xcode as the interface.
I can fool DDD into executing avr-gdb instead of gdb with a symbolic link and that works great.
I can't fire up the debugger because xcode sees my elf file as un executable.

Can I get access to the gdb settings for xcode?

Can I bypass or fool xcode into recognising my elf as executable.
