.mode1 files?

What is the username.mode1 file, and how does it differ from username.pbxuser?

I would like to maybe put one of these under source control since I want to remember the source control settings for the project (this used to be in preferences under XCode 1.1), but I don't want to waste space revision controlling useless information like window positions and sizes.
