After reading this I started to remember that on other UNIX systems you usually accomplish this by mounting the user volume to users folder (/Users) on the system volume. So, I checked on Mac OS X hints and found this article on how to mount volumes this way. Not everybody may want to do this but it is an option and it would remove the volume from showing up on your desktop.
