It appears that there is a serious glitch in the upgrade process for
Xcode 2.0. Certain files including /usr/bin/c++filt have been moved from
the Xcode package into the BSD.pkg. This means that when you upgrade install
MacOS X 10.4 over a volume with MacOS X 10.3 and Xcode 1.5, new copies of
these files are installed from the BSD.pkg. Unfortunately when you later
do the upgrade install of Xcode 2.0 under Tiger, the installer blindly
removes the same files that used to be part of Xcode. This means the user
either has to reinstall BSD.pkg (which will only be possible if a System
Update hasn't been applied in the meanwhile) or will have to do an
Archive and Restore installation over the current volume.
Hopefully future MacOS X installers will attempt to find the
uninstall-devtools.pl file in the Developr folder of the target volume
and run it before proceeding with the MacOS X upgrade installation.
Better yet, assuming that CD installations disappear in MacOS X 10.5,
the installer should note if Xcode was installed and, after uninstalling
Xcode before upgrading MacOS X, it should run the Xcode installer at the end
of the installation process. There is no point in having an upgrade process
for MacOS X that leaves an incompatible version of the devtools installed
in any case.
