Spaces vs tabs

Is there some preference setting I can change to keep XCode from deleting spaces as if they were tabs? For example, if I have four spaces at the beginning of a line, I prefer to delete them one at a time rather than pretending they're a single tab. Some people use them interchangeably as White Space, but I prefer to keep them separate (tabs for indenting, spaces for lining things up).
